West cup 4th Round

Merlin Park, Auchinleck

Netherthird 0 Tynecastle 3

Striker Steven McGlinchey proved to be the difference between the sides on Saturday as the hit man bagged a stunning hat trick in a win that wasn’t as comfortable as the score line suggests.

Tynecastle made the trip to Auchinleck without the services of the suspended Anton McCann, also out were Kevin Taylor, Max Neossi, Tony Cahill and Brian Paxton as the squad was stretched to its limit. Recent Signing David McGaughey has re-joined the club and was handed his debut in the match.

McGlinchey’s first goal was a well taken effort after a through ball from Watson left the striker to battle it out with the centre half, McGlinchey got in front of the defender and slammed the ball past the on rushing keeper after only ten minutes to put Tynecastle one up.

The second goal came after 25 minutes on the clock when Hughes forced a corner on the left, the same players delivery found the head of Muir, the defenders glancing touch was enough to leave McGlinchey with the easiest of tap ins at the back post.

Watson went close also after the goalkeeper failed to hold another McGlinchey effort but the home team came back into things for the last 15 minutes of the first half, forcing a series of corners and putting us under a sustained bit of pressure Brown and Hughes could only watch as one effort rebounded off the near post and away to safety.

HT: Netherthird 0 Tynecastle 2

The home side came out battling in the second period but were matched all the way by a determined Tynecastle side. Cochrane and McGlinchey were causing all kinds of problems going forward and another goal looked likely.

Craig Brown was called into action on two occasions in quick succession and did well to keep our two goal cushion intact with some fine goalkeeping.

McGaughey picked up a heavy knock on the hour mark after a shocking two footed lunge from a frustrated Netherthird player that could easily have resulted in a broken leg for the full back. Tempers of the home side seemed to be boiling over – not least on the side lines as the referee produced a red card for at least one opposing official who was giving everyone a sore head.

Joe Mooney replaced the now crocked McGaughey for his first appearance of the season and the skilful midfielder was instrumental in Tynecastle’s third goal.

Mooney picked out Watson with a threaded pass at the edge of the box and Watson played in McGlinchey to hammer home his third of the day and cap a good performance.

Tynecastle were well in control now and Captain Paul McCarthy made way for James Jordan to partner Cochrane up front in a re-shuffle. Netherthird still continued to battle away and its easy to see why they are such a well quoted side despite being fairly recently formed, they were giving up nothing without a fight.

Tynecastle’s gutsy performance was illustrated by Chris Muir who threw himself in front of the striker six yards out only to cop a nasty wound to the head, the defender is now a doubt for the next match. We preserved our three goal lead after a hard shift.

FT: Netherthird 0 Tynecastle 3

Tynecastle: Brown, Robertson, Muir, McGaughey(Mooney), McCarthy(Jordan), Hughes, Watson, Watt, Anderson, McGlinchey, Cochrane.

Verdict: This was in some respects our best performance of the season to date, we looked solid throughout on a very difficult pitch. Cochrane and McGlinchey proved a handful for the home side with the former Bosco man undoubtedly playing his best game in a Tynecastle shirt yet. A really tough tie awaits us next in the shape of Caledonian Premier outfit Glasgow Harp.

Jock Stein Centre

SSMFL Premier Division

Tynecastle 2 St Mary’s 1

With Lochend full to bursting at the weekend Tynecastle were forced into temporary accommodation in the shape of The Jock Stein Centre in Hamilton for this game.

An unchanged line up from the side that thumped DTI 5-1 the previous week took to the field looking to gain a vital 3 points over St Mary’s.

St Mary’s had the best of the early chances but poor finishing cost them early on in a scrappy opening period. Muir and Cochrane combined well after 15 minutes with the strikers angled low cross just beyond McGlinchey at the far post.

McCann was instrumental as Tynecastle won a free kick 25 yards out after 20 minutes, Paxton’s delivery was met by Chris Muir who’s glancing header ended up in the net to break the deadlock. The goal was initially given ….and then it seemed the ref changed his mind, only to award a free kick to St Mary’s for an infringement.

Tynecastle’s frustration was compounded minutes later when Cairns fired the away side ahead with a good finish. The away side could easily have doubled their lead five minutes before the break but Craig Brown was in inspired form and foiled the strikers best attempt.

Cochrane and Paxton worked an attack down the left on 40 minutes and it was Cochrane who’s low cross looked to strike the hand of the defender amid claims for a penalty, in fairness it would have been soft but when the ball returned to the striker the challenge on him looked a much better shout as he went down in a heap.

With both sides about equal on chances we were aggrieved to go in at the break a goal down after some of the decisions.

HT Tynecastle 0 St Mary’s 1

As the second half started our push for the equaliser was all too apparent.

McCann came close, Paxton was involved constantly and McGlinchey was a threat – all in the first five minutes. The St Mary’s stand in ‘keeper was kept busy and was doing well for his side.

A clutch of continuous offside decisions left both sides frustrated in the second period of the match, each side had one each where at least one defender out of the refs vantage point was clearly playing everybody on, credit to the players though who just got on with it

Tynecastle finally equalised through top scorer Cochrane on the hour mark after a well worked move saw the striker lob the on rushing keeper to pull us level

The same player had another great shout for a penalty only ten minutes later after going beyond the last defender and ending up somehow underneath the same defender as he was about to pull the trigger, no spot kick was given.

St Mary’s were taking nothing lying down and created a good few chances in the second half themselves, in O’Brien, Cairns and of course Tait they have real quality and going forward are a handful, Craig Brown was called into action a few times and each time foiled the strikers with some outstanding goalkeeping.

As more chances were created our dominance in possession finally paid off in the last minute of the match, as the ball found its way to Taylor he drew the ‘keeper before squaring for McGlinchey, the ex-Dunfermline striker had held his run to meet the ball and tap home the winner from close range.

FT Tynecastle 2 St Mary’s 1

Tynecastle: Brown, Muir, Hughes, McCarthy, Watson, Watt(Neossi), McCann, Paxton(Anderson), Taylor, McGlinchey, Cochrane.

Verdict: Both sides put in a great deal of effort here and this must have been a good one for the neutrals. Anton McCann was outstanding in the centre of the park again and his impending ban will compromise us. Craig Brown played his best game since signing for the club without doubt.

The fresh blood this season combined with the non-stop work rate of this team will always give us a chance. We felt our first half goal should definitely have stood. On this showing St Mary’s league position is a false one and any side will do well to get anything from Scott MCorrys men if they can keep up this level of performance. A hard earned three points.

DTI 1 Tynecastle 5

Graeme Watt came in for his first competitive start since joining the club in the only change to last weeks side that took to the field. Tynecastle looked in the mood from the first whistle and after only ten minutes Hughes found Paxton on the left with the winger picking out Cochrane who moved between two defenders to hammer home from 12 yards.

The home side could have equalised a few minutes later hwen ex-Tynecastle striker McKenzie found himself in space but his curled effort was dealt with by Brown.

Good play involving McCann, Watt and Taylor found the latter in space on the right, his cross was inch perfect for Muir who rose to head home and double our lead.

Muir was heavily involved again as we piled on the pressure, his through ball to Cochrane almost led to a third.

The third goal wasn’t far away though and it was Kevin Taylor who found the net from a tight angle on the right, a good finish again after some good build up play.

Anton McCann got in on the act after 30 minutes as we went 4-0 up, the midfielder took a pass from Watt before cutting inside the defender and finishing well into the corner of the net. We dominated the play until the break as the home side struggled to get hold of the game at this point.

HT: DTI 0 Tynecastle 4

As the second half got underway the home side came out in a much more determined frame of mind, the game changed and became more of a midfield battle for much of the second period.

Tynecastle ceated more chances though and McGlinchey was frustrated after passing up two opportunities he would normally bury. Taylor and Paxton were lively and Robertson and Neossi were both introduced on the hour before going on to make telling contributions.

DTI pulled a goal back on 75 minutes after Brown pulled off a great one handed stop low to his right hand side, he could only watch as the ball trickled over the line to deny him a clean sheet.

Anderson replaced Cochrane as Taylor joined McGlinchey up front for the last 15 minutes, Taylor added his second of the day and Tynecastle’s fifth to round off a good win.

The game ended on a sour note as a DTI player suffered what we can only hope is not a serious injury, he looked as if he caught his studs in the turf as he turned and fell. Let’s hope he is going to be ok.

Tynecastle: Brown, Muir(Robertson), Hughes, McCarthy, Watson, Watt(Neossi), McCann, Paxton, Taylor, McGlinchey, Cochrane(Anderson).

Verdict: Our first half performance was as good as anything we have produced in a few seasons, the work rate throughout the side during the game was excellent. Graeme Watt made a notable debut and Paul Robertson looked solid when he came on. African Max Neossi looked really composed and is beginning to fit in really well also. Given the disappointment of last weekend this result was a boost against a good side.

Blochairn Star 2 Tynecastle 1

This game started at frantic pace and both sides looked up for the contest, unfortunately for Tynecastle it was the home side that went into an early lead with five minutes on the clock.

A free kick was awarded after what looked like an innocent challenge 30 yards from goal, as the ball was lifted in it eventually found its way to McCartney who slammed home past Brown from close range. Tynecastle pressed and Muir was unlucky from long range on 15 minutes.

Tynecastle drew level on 25 minutes after McCann dispossessed McGrotty in the middle of the park, his pass found Cochrane, the striker skipped past a challenge to lay the ball on for McGlinchey who finished well from 12 yards. There may have been a hint of offside about the strikers positioning but he was adamant he timed his run perfectly.

The match was played it typical fashion but was very stop start at times with the official choosing to brandish the yellow card to no less than three Tynecastle players in a fairly quiet first period. Tynecastle went on to dominate possession without having too much to show before the break.

HT Blochairn Star 2 Tynecastle 1

After all the good work in the first half we seemed sluggish at the beginning of the second half as Blochairn upped the ante. Hughes was a threat from long balls and it was the player-manager who would be instrumental in what proved to be the winning goal after an hour played.

A very soft free kick in our view was awarded to the home side, Hughes won the resultant header and Heeps volleyed home from just inside the box, Brown had very little to do in the match up until now but had virtually no chance with the strike.

The referee was centre of attention minutes later when Blochairns’ Smith and Tynecastles’ McCann went for a 50-50 ball, with no real winner the ball broke to the Blochairn midfielder McKluskey only for the ref to pull back the play and dish out a second yellow and ultimately a red card to McCann for an apparent foul on the defender.

Both sides made chances late in the game and in fairness either could have snatched another goal. Howe and Jordan went on for Tynecastle as we chased the game but in the end it wasn’t to be and the points stayed in Royston.

FT: Blochairn Star 2 Tynecastle 1

Tynecastle: Brown, Anderson, Muir, McCarthy(Howe), Watson, Hughes, McCann, Paxton, Taylor(Jordan), McGlinchey, Cochrane lochairns new management team have assembled a good squad of players that will take some beating.

Verdict: Both sides worked hard here in what was a great game for the neutral.

Blochairns new management team have assembled a good squad of players that will take some beating, both Whitefield and Blochairn now look like the sides to beat in the second half of the season. That said, we were more than aggrieved at the poor decisions in the match, not least the bookings that seemed to given out all too easily.

Had the game been allowed to flow this could have been a classic.

Strathclyde cup 1st round

Tynecastle 6 Tantallon Victoria 2

Venue: Lochend

Both sides met for the first time in what was a shocking day for football thanks to the driving rain and heavy winds at Lochend. Tynecastle were without top scorer Cochrane for this match, also out were Watt (hamstring) and Neossi (work) from last weeks squad. Steven McGlinchey started his first match since October and Paul Robertson was given his debut at full back.

Tynecastle pressed the away side early and Taylor played in Howe who drew the ‘keeper before finishing well to score his first goal for the club.

McGlinchey and Taylor both had great first half efforts that went close before ‘victoria had a decent shout for a spot kick turned away after 15 minutes.

Tynecastle had to be alert when Brown was beaten with a speculative effort, McCarthy was on hand to clear up as the ball threatened to trickle over the line.

Brian Paxton’s good run down the left ended with a clever long range chip that unfortunately held up in the wind as the away keeper caught it in good time.

Hughes and Taylor were involved in the second Tynecastle goal, some neat play found Taylor who delayed his pass before playing in recent signing Howe again, the former Maryhill Juniors man made no mistake again with a cool finish from 16 yards.

Despite the atrocious conditions some of the football was impressive as both sides went about their business. Tynecastle having the bulk of possession.

HT: Tynecastle 2 Tantallon Victoria 0

Chris Watson added a third goal after a Taylor corner wasn’t cleared, his left footed volley leaving the visiting goalkeeper with no chance. Andy Anderson replaced Kevin Taylor and Jimmy Erskine replaced Paul Robertson who had turned in a solid debut after the recent move from Dunbreac Thistle.

Tantallon Victoria were giving up nothing though and deserve credit for continuing to pass the ball despite the score line and poor conditions. It was Steven McGlinchey though who would have the ball in the net next after good work by Paxton, McCann and Hughes, the strikers back post header giving us a 4-0 advantage.

Tantallon Victoria pulled a goal back after the left winger was allowed a little too much space, in fairness though his curled finish was top drawer.

Brian Paxton then restored our four goal cushion, finishing a direct free kick expertly high in the top corner, a sublime finish.

Andy Anderson effort was deflected past the ‘victoria ‘keeper to make it 6-1 with minutes to play. There was still enough time for the away side to squeeze in a second goal making it 6-2 before the referee ended proceedings.

FT: Tynecastle 6 Tantallon Victoria 2

Tynecastle: Brown, Muir, Roberston(Erskine), McCarthy, Watson, Hughes, McCann, Paxton, Howe, Taylor(Anderson), McGlinchey

Verdict: Easily the worst conditions for football in a long while. Credit to both sets of players, both tried to get the ball down and not a single caution in the match. We had a few good performances again today, Hughes and Paxton were in the thick of most things, Steven McGlinchey put in a solid 90 minutes, Chic Howe looks a real find and Craig Brown between the sticks looked assured after turning in some impressive training performances recently. Best of luck to Davie and the Tantallon Victoria boys for the season, as always we are happy with the win. Firhill United await in the second round.

East Dunbartonshire 1 Tynecastle 3

Venue: Petershill Park

After a three week absence from league business Tynecastle returned with a difficult match away to highly fancied East Dunbartonshire at Petershill Stadium. One change from the previous game saw a return to the starting line up for Chic Howe, while Brian Paxton dropped to the bench.

Early exchanges were quite frantic at times but the game then was proving to be very stop/start as the referee looked to be slightly whistle happy to say the least. The official seemed to be so keen to stamp his mark on the match that he chose to speak to both captains after only a few minutes played, which may have surprised the onlookers.

Tynecastle took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes played when a Frew corner from the left was met by skipper McCarthy, his close range header was enough to squeeze past the home goalie despite his best efforts.

The referee was taking centre stage though and seemed to be flashing yellow cards really frequently, Tynecastle’s Frew and McCann picking up one each, as well as five East Dunbartonshire lads as the half wore on.

Slackness in the Tynecastle backline eventually gave possession to the home side who drew lever when the midfielder fired an unstoppable volley from 20 yards, it swerved and dipped, leaving Devlin with no chance.

HT: East Dunbartonshire 1 Tynecastle 3

With the game finely balanced the next goal was vital, Tynecastle started the brighter and the game proved to be won in the first half hour of the second period. Good work by Howe and Cochrane allowed McCann in at the back post who finished well, only for the man in the middle to disallow the strike for apparent hand ball.

Paxton was introduced for Anderson as Howe moved to the opposite flank. A period of pressure led to a corner on the right, Howe’s delivery was met again by McCarthy as he rose from close range to finish high into the keepers net and send us into a 2-1 lead.

The bookings and start/stop nature of the game continued but minutes after McCarthys strike Cochrane found himself clear through of goal – with the hint of offside possibly but the prolific striker wasn’t hanging about, he finished well from 10 yards after drawing the keeper. 3-1 Tynecastle.

Immediately East Dunbartonshire saw red as the first player was dismissed for what looked a soft caution, minutes later a second walked for another second yellow.

Tynecastle’s Frew was then red carded after a second booking as the game was becoming something of a spectacle for the wrong reasons. A third EDFC player was red carded from the sidelines as the remainder of the game was played out 10 v 9.

Most players looked reluctant to put any sort of physical challenge in for the last ten minutes as was the general feeling. McCarthy and Howe made way late in the game as new signings Paul Robertson and African striker Max Neossi both made their first appearances.

F.T: East Dunbartonshire 1 Tynecastle 3

Tynecastle: Devlin, Muir, Watson, McCarthy(Robertson), Hughes, Anderson (Paxton), McCann, Frew, Howe(Neossi), Cochrane, Taylor

Verdict: East Dunbartonshire are a great addition to the premier and must be admired for the way they play the game. All credit to their management and players – even down to nine players they still tried to pass the ball. Anybody looking at the stats showing four red cards and around 9 or more bookings would think this was a dirty game. This could not be further from the truth, hardly a tackle in the game and it was a real pity the game will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Both sets of players did well here in what was a difficult situation. For our part we are happy with the three points.

In other news the fourth round draw for the West of Scotland cup sees Tynecastle on our travels again. We await the winners as Stewarton Annick, Netherthird and Thorniewood battle it out. It’s highly unlikely that our tie will go ahead this year.

After progressing the the fourth round of the Collville Park West of Scotland cup, Tynecastle looked all set to get back to Premier league business last Saturday with a trip to Blochairn – only to fall victim of the heavy rain, as the match was called off on Friday evening after a pitch inspection.
On the injury front Gary Kilday is making progress and hopes to be back in training before the turn of the year after a six month lay off, the midfielder has been boosted lately after some intense Physio work and is eager to get back training as soon as possible.
Steven McGlinchey is still out until January after damaging ligaments at Lochend recently in the defeat by Victoria Park. The striker is responding well to treatment and should be available for the second half of the season.
